New HCPCS Codes for Wheelchair Transportation/Transit Securement Systems – Correct Coding

Joint DME MAC and PDAC Publication

This publication includes information about the proper coding of wheelchair transportation/transit securement systems.

Effective for dates of service on or after April 1, 2025, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created two (2) new HCPCS codes for wheelchair transportation/transit securement systems:

1. HCPCS Level II code E1022, “Wheelchair transportation securement system, any type includes all components and accessories”
2. HCPCS Level II code E1023, “Wheelchair transit securement system, includes all components and accessories”

CMS determined there was a claims processing need on behalf of Medicare to help reduce the manual adjudication process by the DME MACs for existing HCPCS Level II code K0108 for wheelchair tiedowns and occupant restraint systems.

Code E1022 describes all components and accessories needed to secure the wheelchair to a vehicle for transportation.

Code E1023 describes all components and accessories needed to secure the beneficiary into a wheelchair during vehicle transit.
